If you have a concern, the best thing to do is to submit your question directly to the National Office. You can do so through the National Website, www.poolplayers.com or call the players' hotline number (636) 625-8611 ext. 5210. Let us know what they say (I don't see any reason why your name should be a problem, but then again, I didn't know that Green Rollers was a problem either ) |

OK I was just looking for a list, but now I have a new question 4 ya.
How would a team like mine (The Bottom Feeders) go about finding out if the Nationals will allow our team name? I need to know because I would like to have team shirts made,but don't want to spend the money if I cannot use our name. Thanks for the input guys. |

Torsten, we do not have a problem with your team name locally. I cannot speak for the National Office and whether or not they would make you change it (but I highly doubt it, unless someone in their staff decides that the “smoking” refers to drugs).
The main issues are related to anything that in any way references drugs, alcohol and sex. It is amazing to me the amount of teams that enjoy playing word games with "balls".
Still, we can be a bit more lenient than the National Organization at the local level, but we are in the process of reining it in a bit, as some have pushed the envelope too far. |

Just out of curiosity, how about Smoking Bandits? It's not designed to be vulgar, rather it's a play on the movie title Smokey and the Bandit and the fact that everyone on our team save one person is a smoker. Still, with all the anti-nicotine and anti-smoking state sponsored propaganda saturating the airwaves, we don't want to cause any grief. We'd be happy to be the Anti-smoking Bandits if we're fortunate enough to qualify for a national event.

There is a list at poolplayers.com, but by no means is it a complete list. Basically, we will disallow names that contain references to drugs, sex, or genitalia. We also do not allow creative forms of vulgarity ("FAW Cues" is a classic example). We allow some references to alcohol locally, but those names would not be allowed in a national event. If you choose to use an acronym, we need to know what the acronym stands for before we will allow it (BOHICA = Bend Over, Here It Comes Again).
Teams try to get sneaky with their names. If we can't figure it out right away, we look it up on UrbanDictionary.com, which contains a pretty extensive list of phrases that may not be immediately obvious or may contain a hidden meaning (Tony Danza, for example).
In the past we have allowed almost anything. When we started getting too many of these potentially offensive names, we started disallowing them. Then we got a bunch of "you allow this, but not that?" questions, so we started cleaning up the ones we previously allowed. We are still working on that. This week it is "Deez Nutz", which has been in existence for ten years. Next up is "Balls Deep" and "Five Sticks No Rack"...

I believe, if you go to poolplayers.com, under the national tournament heading, you will find a list of names that have been disallowed/banned.
