I have known all along that there is one place in the valley (aka: Yankee Doodles, where I play out of) that charges $25 a night to play in the league and almost everywhere else charges $10. What I did not know however is that certain teams have taken it upon themselves to tell their host location that when a team from Yankee Doodles plays they have to pay $25, while they always charge $10 to all other teams.
It isn’t the teams at Yankees that charge the fee and we have to pay the same exact same fee as the other team. I have developed a relationship with a lot of the people at Yankees and have been able to get the cost down most of the time this season. However I am not seeing the fairness in making a team pay more than another team when the host location would only charge $10 if not for something said by the team. The money paid to the host locations in no way goes to the players so where is the logic in all this? Especially when it seems like we are running out of places to play in the valley?
Also, is there any way that the league office can negotiate a new fee with Yankees?

Oh, I just spoke with Oscar last night at Pat's Cocktails. He informed me that Paladinos is open on Tues and Thurs night too and has welcomed the APA. That is another place to consider playing out of.

As you know I used to play out of Yankee Doodles. They kept promising that they would fix the tables. When I Captained out of YD, I used to cover the difference for the visiting team. Their bars would charge us $10 for the 2 tables we used for DJ. So I collected a total of $10 from the Visiting Team and $10 from my team and I paid the additional $5 out of my own pocket. I too had a "relationship" with Frank's (one of the owners) son Fabian. I also have a relationship with the other owner Rauol. Fabian has verified twice now that Rauol wants to charge a flat rate of $5 per hour with no cap. Rauol has stated that he never agreed to a cap. I remember the last time I played your team you and to cover the overcharge with your YD "Gold Card". This is one of the two reasons, I moved my team over to Plush Pockets. The second reason is what Victor stated, they are going to close. They have waaaay too many lawsuits pending and are no longer that profitable. That is why my sister sold her share to Rauol and left YD. As far as charging $12.50 at Plush Pockets, that was what I was instructed to do. In the end, your team only paid the $10.
Perhaps it is time to move to another location. Plush Pockets is very accomodating... You also have a choice of continuing on 9 foot or you can have your team use their bar sized tables. Their tables are maintained a bit better than Yankees. YD is a sports bar trying to be a pool hall, whereas Plush Pockets is a Pool Hall trying to be a sports bar. At least I don't have to see the beer stains on the felt when I play at home.

I live about 5 minutes from Yankee Doodles and stopped going there about a year ago because of their "faulty" time keeping. On three different occasions, they overcharged me for a table. The first time, I attributed the amount to my inattention and concluded I was in error. The second time, the girl insisted I was wrong in my assessment of time and I acquiesced without much debate. The third time, I wrote the time down and found that they wanted to overcharge me again. No amount of explanation nor supplication was going to change their minds as to who was correct. I paid and decided that my pool & booze bucks would be better spent elsewhere.
FOOL ME ONCE, SHAME ON YOU! FOOL ME TWICE, SHAME ON ME! FOOL ME THRICE, ADIOS!
PS: I hear that YDs is going to close. The entire grounds (YDs, Coco's, Kinko's, etc.) to be turned into a parking structure for the Westfield Mall with a pedestrian overpass crossing Victory Blvd that will have moving sidewalks leading into the mall. Truth/rumor? I don't know.
PPS: If the management of YDs in Woodland Hills is going to be the same for their Simi Valley location, it's going to be more of the same. They don't seem to value the benefits of sponsoring the APA & other leagues. Nor do they respect their regular customers. Since Simi Valley isn't going to draw the crowds that Woodland Hills does, perhaps they will exercise a little more humility and better PR.
PPPS: Is it permissible to have a team playing out of someone's home? |

Hi Aurora. Lisa Krakower and I used to co-captain a team out of Yankees in Woodland Hills. There was a time when Yankees was actually reasonable. They charged by the hour but it was capped off so the most it ever cost us was 8 bucks per team. Usually it was 6 or 7. I don't know what happened to make them change this, but I tried to speak with the managers. Their response was basically, "Tough @#$%. If you don't like it, go elsewhere."
Long story short, I wouldn't get my hopes up about changing Yankees' policy on fees. The only thing that matches their obstinance is the shoddyness of their playing equipment.

I agree with Richard, $25 is high for any place and especially a bar that is getting drinkers on a week night. Even if those players only have 1 or 2 drinks all night that customers that the bar would NOT have if it were not for the pool league.
Ask for some consideration and if you don't get it there go somewhere else.

Is this $25 per team? I do not mind paying to play on good equipment, but $25 is rather high. And I have played at Yankee Doodles and the tables are in poor condition. I play out of several locations in Camarillo and Thousand Oaks. Some places are free and the most we pay is $5 per team. One pool hall provides free practice tables throughout the night. We have several places that discount food and drink to APA players. And we even have one place that pays everyones dues! I suggest that you try to find a place that enjoys your business. |
