Is there ANY way to send out something to the teams and or the team captains to reassure these people that do not read the rules and bylaws that shots should be held to 20 sec. and TIMEOUTS are only 1 thats ONE minute long.It is getting old watching people take 5 -7 minutes just to miss.I'm not trying to be rude but (COME ON)it can be a bit frustrating.

Agreed - players should play faster, this 1AM end time makes me an unhappy boy at work on Thurday mornings!
On the flip...when I first started playing last September I was SLOOOOOOW. There is so much going on in a new player's head regarding, proper hit, shape, defense, fouls etc....it's pretty exhausting. As far as experienced players - very much agreed - hurry up and play. It's supposed to be fun AND competitive, not just the latter.
I find the longer timeouts come when experienced coaches try to point out the exact shot through pointing at the felt, holding the players cue, etc....rather than discussing strategy and moving on. As a coach, I always try to ask my player first - "what are you looking at" and then one of two things: "I like that idea" or "have you thought about this?" - end of discussion. Mainly because my beer is getting warm & hates to be neglected for too long.

just a comment... a less tha 60 second timeout would be taken If more coaches would just make a simple suggestion about a shot or play a safety, instead of trying to keep their 5 speeds playing as 3's and their 4 speeds playing as 2'S... things would go a LOT faster.....

I tried both. No luck. The gum doesn't taste that bad, but I couldn't keep it lit. The patch just peeled the skin off my lips...

Point taken however in our defense 90% of the time we already know who our next player is and are usually smoking while the other team decides what to do,or their next player is smoking with us.But I do understand what you are saying.Thank You TAZ. |

Hey, Sharpshooter…..remember back to the beginning of this post where you referred to teams not reading their bylaws and observing the time guidelines for time-outs? I believe I also made reference (in one of my early replies) that “…Often times the team who is complaining forgets or doesn't realize they have teammates of their own guilty of the same infractions”.
Did you know there is a 2-minute time limit (covered in the same bylaws) to put up your next player? I wonder what your opinion is of a team who, upon completion of a match, has to take the entire team outside the host location to have a smoke while discussing who they will put up next. I’m sure the discussion lasts as long as the slowest smoker (which can often times take up to 10 minutes). Perhaps that team should pow-wow inside, declare their next player and then the rest of the team can step out to smoke?

I was going to leave this one alone, but you drove me to post. What this ORIGINAL topic was directed to was the constant 5-10 minute time outs called by someone we play on a regular basis. It's not meant for the person who takes a 2 minute time out once in their lives and we're going to jump all over them.
Let me give you a quick example (ACTUALLY HAPPENED)....I'm in the middle of an 8 ball match..playing a player ranked lower then myself. Player is new to pool in general, thinks english is only a course they took in high school...banks??? banks aren't open at this hour!!! hmmmm get the idea??? Well during a time out, after waiting a few minutes...I went outside and smoked an entire cigerette, came back in and the coach was STILL trying to explain where this person should hit the ball and how it was going to come off the rail, and what they should do after that ball was pocketted. (needless to say the player got overwhelmed and scratched on the first shot..forget the rest of the rack)
Now I have no issue with helping out someone new to the game...hell, take 5 minutes PROVIDED your not trying to teach them the game in whole during that time out. Also providing this is not a common occurance, to the point you are KNOWN for doing things like that. The person(s) this is directed to...are in fact "known" for such behavior!
Your entirly right in saying this is all about fun...I agree wholeheartedly, but what about the fun for the person waiting 10-15 minutes to take their next shot? I can tell ya, after that episode I had, it would have been "fun" to throw my stick like a dart and run around the pool table speaking in tongues!
As for the player on your Monday night team you reffer to...the whole league is aware of the situation and I think everyone does quite well in allowing extra time for this. Nobody tries to rush this player and take the fun out of it for anyone...I don't believe this player even violates the time rule.

I like having rules and I believe that everyone should know and play within the rules. The rules are what provide an enjoyable competitive game....but there are cases where the rules simply do not make sense to any reasonable person and that is when common sense must prevail.
Unfortunately we will always have occasional instances where one's common sense conflicts with another..... then we just call the league office...he he.
