You every showed up to pool already had a couple drinks miss a shot everyone knows that you should make.....
Ever CHOKE on the 8....
Loss a match that knew you would win....
Ever get accused of coaching when all your doing is talking to your player, and i am talking about the local level not REGIONALS or NATIONALS or PLAYOFFS
When another person accesses you of "SAND BAGGING" weather they use those words or not... It may be in a look the give you, or a statement that they make that implies it, you're basically Questioning the Honesty and Integrity of that person and that persons love for a simple game of pool.
For those of you who would question mine let me tell you something...
I HAVE BEEN A APA MEMBER FOR ALMOST 10 YEARS (give or take) I HAVE OVER 600 MATCHES PLAYED I HAVE RECEIVED MULTIPLE GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP AWARDS
So please next time you open your mouth think before you speak! If you think a player is SANDBAGGING you might wanna check there credentials before you make an accusation. I can be found on any given Monday Wednesday or Thursday playing pool in Camarillo trying to have a good time. Those of you out there that enjoy the game the way i do.. I look forward to seeing you each week!! For the rest well maybe you just dont know?

I saw this happen to a player at the Mix a couple of years ago (Mike Nigerian...(probably not spelled correctly)...) while he was playing a match in the regionals. He was not using the bridge though.
After the match he went back and shot the same shot 3 times in a row and made the 8 ball crawl out of the pocket all three times!
If I hadn't seen that with my own eyes I wouldn't have believed it. I guess it can happen to the pros as well.

Posted - 02/28/2008 : 7:28:07 PM Yeah sure, there would be no sandbagging without the 23 rule. There would also be no league. Even at 24 or 25, history has shown that there would be dominant teams that would kill the fun for everyone else.
Games (or points) on the wire are incentive enough for cheaters to try to gain whatever advantage they can. It doesn't take much. The best defense is scrutiny with the help of all the honest players out there, and big penalties for those who are caught. Everyone must do their part. Those who don't want to be part of the solution become part of the problem...

Posted - 02/28/2008 : 6:43:07 PM seems like the BEST solution to get rid of sandbagging is to do away with the 23 rule and let EVERYBODY play to the best of their ability and since it is still a handicapped league the players would still have games on the wire if they are playing a better player. Even if one team having all 7's played a team with ALL 2's BOTH teams would still have an oportunity to win and have fun cause the race would still have 5 games on the wire... just a thought have a nice day

Posted - 02/27/2008 : 6:21:45 PM Actually, the reason Derrick hears it a lot is because of bonehead shots. These result from his rapid-fire machine gun style of play. But the next time Derrick shoots "normal" speed (i.e., takes a little more time between shots) will be the first time...

Posted - 02/27/2008 : 5:01:56 PM Kerry, unfortunately the captains that do not care to properly keep score are the same ones that do not bother to show up at a captain’s meeting. Derrick, Camarillo seems to be overly sensitive about their skill levels, and sandbagging is a very common accusation. There is even a ‘7’ in 8-ball that gets accused of sandbagging. Why even let this bother you? By talking about it this way, it makes you look guilty or just insecure. Personally, I do not believe that you sandbag in regular league play and I never did. I think what might be happening is that you are never afraid to challenge your opposition’s best player, which will result in more loses than the player who goes for the easy win. And when you get to regionals you will have more experience against better players and you may appear to be playing over your skill level.

Posted - 02/27/2008 : 12:21:43 PM I have known Derrick a long time as well and I can tell you he does not sand bag! Sometimes he shoots like GOD and some times he shoots like a lesser God. I know because I have been both the benefactor and victim of his performance swings.
It does hurt when you are trying your best to do well and then because you did not perform as well as you sometimes do to have some insensitive clod tell you that you are sand bagging.
I have noticed over the years that these people never accuse you of sandbagging right after they have beaten you. They only make those rude remarks when they have failed to beat you (in short they lost).
Something to think about.
Derrick this scenario reminds me of a little story. A new leader gave a speech in front of a tough crowd and afterwards as he came down off stage to meet one of his trusted advisors he over heard one of the crowd say "Man! That was the worst speech I ever heard!"
The trusted advisor told him: "Aww...Don't listen to him, he's just repeating what he heard everyone else say!"

Posted - 02/27/2008 : 10:44:13 AM When I started playing in the APA, Derrick was my first captain. I believe at the time he was a four in 8-ball. I decided to play in Ventura and I did not see Derrick for probably a year or so later at either an MVP tournament or singles regionals tournament. I could not believe the advancement Derrick had made in his game. We talked briefly and he said he had really put a lot of time into his game. I was truly impressed. So anyone out there who thinks Derrick might sandbag is thinking without the proper knowledge. One night does not a sandbagger make. Also for those of us that really take pride in our game it is a very deep cut to be accussed of sandbagging. So think before you talk.
Richard, I am curious as to why whenever I watch or go up against a team from the thousand oaks area in the tournament of champions or regionals, it seems like they always have several players on their team that play a couple of skill levels above their ranking. It is not just Camarillo. Those same feelings you have about Camarillo are prevelant everywhere.
If there is a team captian out there that does not know how to keep score or what a defensive shot is then they have not been to any of the last 4 or 5 captains meetings. It is a topic discussed at length at almost every meeting we have. So either go to the captains meetings or if you have gone, than listen to what is being said.
It is better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt

It seems to be common in Camarillo to think that others are sandbagging. I spoke to a Camarillo transplant last night that is now playing in Thousand Oaks. Her remark was “They play different in Thousand Oaks”. “They play smarter and are all trying to win”. In Camarillo, player’s skill levels are a common topic. Players come to me all the time asking if there is something that I can do. And I tell players that there is, I can show them how to properly keep score. Many players do not even know the definition of a defensive shot. Lagging a ball up near a pocket is a good strategy in 8-ball. It is not sandbagging. But it is a defensive shot. And Derrick you can help by helping others learn how to keep score. Everybody wants to do the right thing, it is just that they do not always know how or realize that it is important. I spoke with a team captain last week that showed me their red stamp on their score sheet for not marking defensive shots. She did not understand why that was important.
