Well, I'd have to say it was a VERY successful year for South Coast players in the National Singles Championship. Just look at this list:

Sherry Ryan - 129th
Erwin Bremermann - 65th
Lori Perry - 33rd
Rita Shemwell - 33rd
Courtneay Newton - 17th
Jon Bourgault - 17th
Kato Lin - 9th
Jerry Lin - 2nd

Congratulations on the EXCELLENT showing!

But wait, there's more. We always stress sportsmanship with our players in these events. Nothing makes us happier than to see our players nominated for the Sportsmanship awards. As it turns out, we know that at least four of our eight players were nominated for these awards. Lori Perry was even nominated by a player who was playing on the next table - talk about standing out! Since we had to stay and watch Jerry in the finals, we were there when the Sportsmanship Award for the 9-Ball Shootout was presented to Mr. Kato Lin! Congratulations Kato, you made us proud.

You can actually see a video interview of Kato at poolplayers.com, on day 2 of "APA TV". You can also see Courneay Newton at the end of the day 2 segment. But whatever you do, DO NOT WATCH THE DAY 1 SEGMENT!

I had the honor of once again meeting Kato at Nationals. If there is an ambassador for the APA it should be Kato.
Oh and you are correct again the best player does win that day and you should treat them that way.

Thanks to the South Coast for holding the regionals and allowing me to go to Vegas I had a great time.

No Kato, you're not running for anything (or TO anywhere)...

This was my first attempt at the National level. I truly enjoyed it. I am now determined to encourage more players from our Division as well as the entire SouthCoastAPA family to qualify, qualify, qualify. The more people interested the more boards we can hold. I noticed that the SL 1-2-3 tier is wide open. Please encourage all of your 1,2,and 3's to go and qualify. Help them learn the art of defense, defense, defense. While others were watching the SL9's play, I watched two SL2 play a match. One of the SL2 was having problems shooting long shots, however, she played beautiful safes. Which in turn gave her ball in hand. I asked her later on how she was coached back home. She said "My team mates taught me to play defense and then try to get the cue ball to the middle of the table so I don't have to hit long shots." She won that match. I cannot stress the air of fun, friendliness, competitiveness and high energy going to the National brings. I'd love to see more representatives of SouthCoastAPA there next year. I certainly will be trying again.

Unless of course my sister Faye-Lee qualifies and then she says I have to focus only on her (yeah right).

Thank You for all of the folks in this league that has enticed me to play and gotten me to me stay with your support, sportsmanship, and clean competition.

I can rattle off at least 40 people I have played against that would call a foul on themselves before the opponent even asks "Is that ball in hand?” That is truly amazing, I have played in other leagues that the participants are literally hell bent on winning… at any cost.

Sportsmanship does not mean just being friendly in the beginning of the match. It’s not just shaking hands at the end of the game. It’s how your attitude is during that time. In fact, it is how your attitude is throughout the match and especially the end of the match, regardless of whether you win or lose. I have sadly seen people who lost go up and half-heartedly shake the winner’s hand, looking away, or worse saying, “Good win, I shot like crap” or “You got lucky tonight cause my game was off”. Whether that person who lost realized it or not, they just robbed the other person the warmth and glow of the win. The other person brought their A-game, congratulate them.

I believe this starts with the Captains. In the beginning of my play with this league I met questionable Captains and great Captains like Torsten Sporn, Jon Bourgault, Julie Shragg, Mike Elm, Lucas Mahan, Nathan Palma, Oscar Rosza, Mark Ritner, Penny Spitzmesser, Gibbi Tkatch, just to name a few. They promote the art of being competitive with being respectful to the game and their opponents. I never hear trash talking from any members of their team in fact when any of my team members make a great shot their team applauses. That’s sportsmanship. Anyway time to get off my soapbox, otherwise Phil and Taz may think I am running for “mayor” or “ambassador” of SouthCoastAPA….. hey first the SouthCoastAPA then world domination. Heh Heh Heh.

Warmest Regards to all
Kato-san

One last comment:

I had two freinds that play in other leauges with me there to cheer me on. They were astounded at the good sportsmanship they witnessed during the entire event, especially with the number of people present. They were very impressed and have now expressed interest in joining APA since they like how the players all handeld themselves win or lose. I thought you might like to hear that :)

Excuse me Jon, but you can only claim the proud uncle roll. The Mom/Dad positions are already taken.

As Phil said, we are extremely proud of all of our players. The sportsmanship displayed was over-the-top. I can only hope that it's catching and continues to spread like wildfire and applied to all league matches.

Im very happy for everyone that qualified for Vegas as that was a great feat in itself (especially Jerry's fantastic run). As a Division rep, I am even more proud of my DJ division that sent Rita, Kato, Lori and Courtenay that all did so well. I feel like a proud father over all my little wed night dj babies. Great job guys...

Congratulations to everyone who played, and especially those that did well. It is also nice to see some of our people on APA t.v. especially you Taz.

It is better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt

File this under "No Surprise"

When I played in the valley divisions, I got to know Kato Lin fairly well and he was always a gentleman, and a genuinely fun dude to play against.

Thanks and congrats to everyone who represented South Coast for doing so in a classy, dignified, and butt-kicking manner!
