We have scheduled the first Guaranteed Qualifiers weekend for Saturday, February 23 (The Mix starting at 1pm) and Sunday, February 24 (PJ's Pub starting at 10am).

We need everyone's help spreading the word out on the Singles Program. We had our most successful year to date in 2007, running a total of 220 boards and advancing 13 South Coast APA members (okay, 11 since Richard Haydt & Jerry Lin are each competing in both the 8-Ball and 9-Ball Championships), with the possibility of advancing 3 more (out of those competing in the Spring Singles Regional the first weekend in March).

BRING A FIRST TIME PARTICIPANT AND YOU'LL EACH GET $10 OFF YOUR BOARD FEE!! This "special" may or may not be repeated later this year. Don't forget the eligibility requirements:
1) Must have a pulse and be breathing;
2) Must be willing to have competitive fun and be a good sport;
3) Must be an active player, on an active team, in the format (8-Ball or 9-Ball) that is being played;
4) Must have a minimum of 10 actual match scores (within the last two years) in the format being played

You don't need any money to join in on the fun. If you win a board, you'll have two weeks to come up with the board fee or we will simply discard your board AND you don't have to be there at start time. Show up anytime during the day and play on the next available board. We will be there to run boards as long as there is a minimum of 4 players wanting to play.

See you all on Feb. 23-24.

Once we have the necessary 16 players qualified in your skill level tier and format (9-Ball SL4-5), I will personally contact you (by phone). At this time we have 13 players qualified in your tier. We plan to schedule our next qualifier weekend the first part of August.

Phil - I won a 9 ball singles local qualifier at PJ's on 3/16/08 and am eligible to advance to the Regional Level of the 9-ball shootout. As of today's date I have yet to receive any additional information. Being new to the APA and its administrative structure, how do I obtain further information?

Along the goal of spreading the word, am playing on 3 teams with 15 players that are qualified to participate. 8 players are defintely going to play in at least one qualifier, probably 5 will show up this weekend. Have also encouraged all the teams I encounter to look at the flier. My goal this year is to see 2 of the players that I give the information to go to nationals. Had one this year so ( Formal public congrats Ted Nunez ) Also intend to get me there.

How many from your teams are going to qualify?

As soon as we have 16 players qualified in any one skill level tier (8-Ball SL 2-3; 4; 5; 6-7 or 9-Ball SL 1-2-3; 4-5; 6-7-8-9) we can hold a National Qualifier and advance the winner to the 2009 National Singles Championships. The earlier we start qualifying players, the more chances everyone will have to advance to the National Championships.

Two questions that have been asked and I'd like to address:

1) Can we break-up the 6-9 tier in 9-Ball?
Provided we qualify enough players, there is no reason why we can't hold a separate National Qualifier for 9-Ball SL 6-7 & SL 8-9. All that is required is players coming out to qualify early.

2) Will you continue to provide financial assistance (in the form of payments)?
Yes. Several players took advantage of this opportunity. I don't want money to be the thing that gets in the way for those who want to participate in the singles program. For some of us, $100 is a lot of money all at once, but $10 or $20 a week is not so bad. So, if you are committed to participate in the singles program and want to set up a payment plan that will make it possible for you to participate, call me and I'll go over the details.

Our goal this year is simple.
1) Spread the word about the Singles Program -- there are still a lot of players out there who don't know about the Singles program
2) Set a new local record by qualify more players for the 2009 National Singles Championships than previous years.

It all starts this weekend. We hope to see many of you on Saturday, Feb. 23 at The Mix (Montrose) and Sunday, February 24 at PJ's Pub (Thousand Oaks).
