I remember at our Captain's Meeting Phil brought up the possibility of using our prize money for an additional level of play that would use that money as a reward in the proposed tournament (?). Phil said he would make a post explaining how this works so that we could all see it spelled out and debate the pros and cons.
Perhaps I missed it on this message board but I have not seen it. Since Phil requested that all the captains ask our teammates for their input I would like something I can direct my players to, to read.
As it stands now, my opinion is in favor of keeping the exiting prize fund checks as is. That's because my team enjoys the prize funds we receive every year to spend on team activities such as: dinners/team meetings, t-shirts, strip joints (just kidding) etc.
On a side note: I think the concept of "team play" is often lost in this game for some reasons inherent to the game itself, but also because many of our senior and higher skilled players, who are leaders in the league, often do not put much emphasis on team above individual play. I realize that's a controversial statement, and it's only my opinion. My paritucular team thrives off of the team concept and we often get complimented from other teams for it even when we don't win. I'm grateful to have such a blend of selfless players, but I would also like to see it rub off on other teams. Perhaps if more teams used their prize checks for team building activities they might have similar positive results
However, I admit that I don't grasp the details or the entire concept of the proposal Phil laid out at the captain's meeting(DEC'05). So perhaps with a bit more information I could be influenced and others could be more informed.
I hope more information will follow this post.

Here's a post from the 'Captains Checks' thread that explains the basics:
You almost got it right, Wayne. Everything up through the end of playoffs would be the same as it is now. Teams would earn qualification the way it is now. The difference would be what they qualify for. Instead of qualifying directly for regionals, the teams would qualify for a tricup tournament. There would be about 16-20 teams in the 8-Ball tricup and 10-15 in the 9-Ball tricup.
The top eight finishers in the tricup tournament qualify for regionals. In the spring sixteen teams would qualify in 8-Ball, resulting in a field of 32 for the regionals. The field for 9-Ball regionals would be 24. Assuming we will be sending four 8-Ball teams and three 9-Ball teams to Nationals, that means every bracket in regionals would be eight teams (or less, see below). If we grow enough to send more teams, the brackets in regionals become even smaller.
To make the top eight in a tricup, an 8-Ball team would only have to win one or two rounds. In 9-Ball a team could make the top eight without even playing a match, depending on the draw.
The top four teams (or eight, depending on the money) in the tricup tournament would win money. Here is an example breakdown:
Top 2 receive $3000 each
Third place (2 teams) get $1000 each
Fifth place (4 teams) get $500 each
That's $10,000 in each tournament, or $20,000 total. We probably would only play down to the final two teams. These numbers increase as we grow.
In order to fund the tournament we would have to eliminate the end-of-session checks that currently go to every team. That seems to be the main point of contention with the captains.
Note that the smaller fields in regionals will also mean fewer matches there to win the trip to Nationals. Basically the tricup would be the first round or two of regionals. In addition, if a team qualifies more than once through the tricup tournaments, the field for regionals would be reduced even more. If we have byes in the regionals, they would first go to teams that qualified through more than one tricup tournament.
If a team does not qualify for regionals through the tricup, they are able to try again the following session. With the current setup, you get one chance. If you lose the first round of regionals (and half of the teams do), you're done until next year. With tricups, you could lose the first round in the summer tricup AND the first round in the fall tricup, but still make it to Nationals.
If a team is qualified for regionals and wins their division again, the highest-finishing non-qualified team (based on division standings at the end of the regular session) will be invited to the tricup. If there is money in the tricup, the division winner will also be invited to play.
That's basically it in a nutshell. Pretty simple eh?

What a game eh!!! what a game!
I honestly think we'll beat Denver.
Two(2) reasons:
1) We're used to playing teams like us (ie. Ravens)
2) Homefield seems to be working to our advantage psychologically
