| I am the captain of Paddy Cakes, we play out of Paddys (a gay bar) several of members of my team are not gay, but all of us love pool. Last night we played Jerrys Kids at their home location, prior to playing, their captain entered the pool hall and announced loudly to all "are we the homo team, oh, wait that's who we're playing" (attempting to make a pun out of being the 'home' team) Later that night, two of his players apologized for their captains statement. When it came time to sign the score sheets I congratulated him on beating what he called the 'homo' team. He replied "oh, you know I didn't call your team 'homo' I called our team 'homo'" Well, he's correct in his little world. |

Though I don't know that this is a "sportsmanship" issue, it was DEFINITELY in poor taste, regardless of which team it was directed at!

No Ron, neither the league office (including employees & representatives) nor the APA condones this type of behavior. Unfortunately, all we can do is chalk it up to someone being ignorant. We cannot stop anyone from bringing his or her personal biases with him or her. All we can really do is strongly encourage all of our players to be courteous and polite to their opponents, regardless of personal feeling with regard to race, creed, religion, sex, sexual orientation, political views or any other criteria that can be used by some to discriminate against others.
It is a real shame, but discrimination is alive and well and often times hides behind rights such as "freedom of speech".

I have played apa for several years now and Ron was here when I started. I have never seen Ron without a smile on his face. From what I have seen he is always nice to the people around him. In fact I have never had a problem with any of the teams from Paddy's (except for bouncing us from the playoffs). I find it ridiculous that any adult would say anything as childish, unkind, and stupid as this person did.
So Ron and anyone else that was offended by this, just blow it off and take it for what it is. I for one am glad you are in this league and would miss you and your teams if you were not playing pool with us.
I hope the offending party has realized the error of his statement and feels some remorse and appologizes as Boisterously as he offended. |

I don't know. Using the word "homo" in reference to someone's sexual preference sounds like a slur to me. I'm german, and I'm not particularly fond of people using the variety of slurs that exist in reference to my heritage. I certainly don't appreciate my black, jewish, middle eastern, latin, or whatever ethnicity friends being referred to as "that (slur)" regardless of whether or not it's done in jest. Those things are offensive. I do believe offensive language is covered in the APA conduct or etiquette guidelines. Ron, I don't think the guy was trying to offend you. We are all guilty of letting our ass get ahead of our mouth every once in a while. That said, I would strongly recommend that you officially document any future offensive languague toward you or your team via a sportsmanship report, whether that is the exact category of transgression or not. The APA manual does say something to the effect of repeated behavioral violations of the APA code of conduct may result in suspension of membership priveleges. While the threat of that isn't going to rid anyone of their unreasonable biases, it may at least make them keep their mouths shut so you don't have to hear it.

| Yes, that was a stupid thing for me to say, and at the time I didn't think it was so bad. I'm sorry. I tried to apologize after the match was over I didn't think Ron would take it so serious. A joke in bad tast. Sorry to all that I have offended. Phil |
