Man - I hate them.

We played a team this past week that will usually forfeit a game or three on away nights. Sure enough, we played them at their place (again) & stunk up the place going 1-4. I know it happens, I just feel like whining (why? see below) Considering that our league is going to come down to the final week again, it's frustrating. I won't say it has an big impact on the standings b/c everyone of our players should and could have won...but it was just one of those weeks where it all goes bad. Now had they come to our joint, we start the night up one or two wins before we even get started & can adjust our match-ups accordingly.

Question of the week: How do yo know you truly deserve a SL-4?

You beat a 6 one week only to turn around and get your behind handed to you by an SL-2! arrrgh

In regards to your deserved skill level, I can only say this. The handicapping system, while we all at some point find something to complain about with it, is about as fair as you can get. You'd be hard pressed to find an established player (by league standards, 10 matches completed in a format. by Torsten standards, 20 matches) severely over or underrated. Of course, there are going to be degrees of 4-ness, just like there are degrees of 6-ness or 7-ness. Usually, someone who has just been promoted a skill level will be slightly less apt at their new level than a player who has been there for some time.

Take into account also that when a 4 has to play a 7, the 4 only needs to win two frames, compared to five for the SL7. That's a big mountain to climb, especially if the high ranked player makes an error early in the match.

Anyway, I have four SL4 players on my Tuesday night team. They're all good guys and they all work hard at their game to varying degrees of success. Nobody likes to lose. But if everyone won every game or made every shot they attempted, everybody would be a 7 and there wouldn't be an APA. Try not to take it too hard if you get mauled by a SL2. Take solace in the fact that they must have played well, encouraged by the task of taking on a more skilled player. They feel just as good as you did after you beat that SL6.

Keep on truckin'.

You also have to remember that the 6 you beat probably felt the same way you did when you lost to the 2.

Should a 4 lose to a 2 on a regular basis? No
Should a 4 beat a 6 on a regular basis? No
Things tend to even out over the long haul.

Now if you find yourself losing to 2s and 3s alot, but beating 5s, 6s, and 7s more often than not, then look toward yourself and see why you struggle with the lesser player and thrive against the higher players. It is not the system, but the players within the system.
In any match, motivation can be a great asset to the lower level player.

Shooting against lower handicaps is also frustrating because of the amount of balls they leave on the table. It's like that old hustle where someone spots his opponent 2 or 3 balls but really it's helping him and not his opponent.

Yep!
We all have had these experiences.
Last week (ranked as a 5 in 8 ball) I made and 8 ball break, won my match against a 5 giving me a 3 wins in a row (that followed a 12 game losing streak.

Then last night I lost to a 3...he beat me 2 to 0.
I got down to the 8 ball in both games but in both games I missed the shot on the 8 ball. The miss was not because it was a difficult shot either....I left myself a fairly easy and makable shot on the 8 but then just plain old missed the shot!

That is the way pool goes so if you want to love the game you have to learn to endure these kinds of things along with all those great performances that you will remember the rest of your life.

Here's one of my personal favorites. One game of 9-Ball, I get the break, and the rails are your pockets. All you gotta do is drive an object ball to a rail and it's down. I win almost every time. How?

Wow, Phil. I think I'm stumped. I'm almost willing to say, "I'll take that bet," but then again, that's the point, isn't it. The only thing that I can think of is, if the rails are my pockets then every time the cue ball hits the rail I give you ball in hand. Other than that, I'm lost.

Sounds to me like you must break and make the nine ball, break and run or follow the break and hook the opponent to a point that he can not hit his ball.

As long as he can't hit his ball he can't drive it to a rail.

Come Phil....tell us how this works!

After Phil breaks, all the balls that hit a rail are pocketed. Hopefully ALL the balls hit rails but even if they didn't he only has to shoot the ones that are left!!!

I think!!!

That's got to be it, what Torsten said, right? You know how hard it is to run balls without hitting a rail? Everytime the cue hits a rail it is "down" and he gets ball in hand, so evil.

I don't think Phil wants you to even "get to the table" to worry about the cue ball hitting a rail - but if you do get a turn then you must have excellent control of the cue ball so that you do not hit a rail and turn the table back over to him with ball in hand!!!
