What is the deal with the lag or coin toss? The "Offical Team Manual" states that, "Players lag to see who wins the first break." There is nothing mentioned in the manual about a coin toss. Tonight I feel that I lost a rackless patch because I picked heads instead of tails. Where is the mastery in a coin toss?

Hi Dani, This is another one of those mutual agreement situations between the respective players. It is not something you should get in the habit of doing (or it WOULD be in the rules) but at the end of the day it's a fifty/fifty chance whether you lag or flip especially if you are an even playing field, say two SL fives are playing, on the other hand a SL7 should win the lag against a SL2 so the flip may be an advantage to the lower SL. Amongst friends and opponents that I have a good repoir with - we tend to flip. You are correct that it does not mention the use of a coin in the rule book, and in regards to your rackless patch, who's to say that you might have broken the first rack made the 8 and scratched? Done that before! So my suggestion is use some common sence when this situation arises. Remmember, we are all here to have fun!!!!

Dani, you are correct. The rule is lag for break; however, as with other rules, if the two shooters in a match agree to handle a situation in a certain manner, that agreement must be honored. A lot of players agree to flip a coin for the break (for whatever reason). If either player wants to lag, the rule is lag. I would encourage everyone to lag, as it is a skilled shot.

What I don't quite understand is, if you are approached to flip a coin rather then lag, and aren't comfortable with that...then don't proceed to go along with the flip. Tell the other player that you would rather lag , as stated in the rules.

As you stated, you felt you lost a rackless patch because of this, when in reality there isn't any garentee you would have won the lag to begin with, so you might have had the same outcome regardless.

Nothing personal to anyone, but if your going to waiver from the rules, even if agreed upon by both players...your right to complain about it afterwards should, without saying, be out the window!!

Just my thoughts (again LOL )

A wife comes in and yells, ''Honey, pack your clothes! I just won the lottery!''

Her husband yells back, ''Should I pack for the beach or for the mountains?''

The wife replies, ''I don't care! Just get the hell out!''

The point is at least with the lag I have control of the outcome where as with the flip its all up to chance. Yes, if I had broke I may not have won the match but seeing as how the other matches went I was saying in general that I might have made a rackless patch. I was unsure of the rule on lagging because nothing is stated in the rule book about it, that is what this post is about... what you are and are not able to do about a lag/coin toss. Do you understand that Ginger? Hopefully that cleared something up for you.

Dani, you posted "I was unsure of the rule on lagging because nothing is stated in the rule book about it..." Please refer to The Official APA Team Manual, page 44, #1 Lagging "Players lag (see LAG described in Definitions) to see who wins the first break"

There was nothing in the book about a coin toss. I was asking about that. I did not know if a coin toss was something that is up to the home team like I have been told or not. When looking up the lag I noted, in my first post, what it said and that there was nothing about a coin toss. That was my confusion. I now know that a coin toss isn't a way to start a game unless both teams agree and not just the home team.

Dani, FYI- I would like to take the time to bring something up that may be of some help. In your opening statement you said (quote)"at least with the lag I have control of the outcome" I learned a valuable lesson, one that raised my game and the way that I approach it.
You are NEVER in control of your opponents actions and you are ONLY ever playing the table (so when you lag you have NO control of you opponents lag)
You do not see the table the same as your opponent nor do you stroke the ball in the same way, you will have shots that you are strong in - that your opponent is weak in and vice versa... these are just a few of many differences, so in other words - You ONLY have limited control and ONLY when you are at the table. You can Never predict the outcome even when your shooting and you can do nothing but watch when you are not at the table. Hope this helps (food for thought) it was not meant to offend. Simon
