| Next session is around the corner. As you all know, we hold a captains' meeting at the start of every session. I would appreciate your thoughts on topics you would like to see discussed at the captains' meeting. |

I would like to see some discussion about double hits. I don't really know what the rule is or what to tell my teammates when the situation arises.

That is a great post. So many players push thru the ball when it is so close. I even saw a captain who was a higher rated player take ball in hand, place the cue ball lrss than a quarter inch from the 4 ball (between the 4 and rail) and shoot straight at it towards the side pocket. And this was in regionals and that started a heated discussion. I mean c'mon folks you dont even need to watch it to see it was a bad hit you can hear the double tap sound. Simple physics.

This is a good topic, I see this all the time in league. If you're shooting and the cue ball is close to or touching the object ball, and the cue ball travels at the same speed as the object ball after the hit, that's usually a bad hit, right? Or am I missing something? I've had one or two captains call this on my players, but I've never called it myself and in our division it seems like no one really gives it much thought. I'm curious as to what everyone else thinks about this.

A double-hit is a foul. However, it should only be called by a third party who has been asked to watch the shot, because players who commit this foul usually have no idea what happened. At Nationals, a referee who is called to watch for a double-hit will actually tell the shooter what he's looking for and what the shooter has to do to avoid the foul.

| I agree. Good discussion topic; however, I would appreciate your taking the double-hit discussion to a different post. This post was asking for captains' input as to matters that should be discussed / covered during our pre-session captains' meetings. I am still looking for input..... |

We can discuss it all you want, but the rule is quite clear. As Phil already stated in this thread, a double-hit IS a foul and one that should only be called by a third party. So, if the players do not ask for a third party to watch the hit, you cannot call a double-hit foul, regardless of how much the coach, captain or "7/9" on the team wants to scream about it.
A double-hit most often occurs when the cue ball and object ball are pretty close together (NOT when they are touching). It is easily avoided by not shooting straight into the object ball. This is the "simple" explanation. One can get quite technical here, but there is no point as we run an amateur league. |

I enjoyed the one season that we did have it in your distict.

I think from speaking with captains that you may need to discuss asking for id's and verifying players at matches. There may even need to be a flyer in the envelopes saying such so that events of cheating or captains not knowing the player and taking another captains word for it will not turn into a heated debate or a mudslinging fight at the end of the night. |
