I'm concerned to check my cue stick.
Can you take a cue stick on a plane or do you have to check it? What about chalk, tip shapers, talcom powder (sp?), and other supplies?
If anyone knows, please let me know.

No, they will NOT let you carry it on the plane.
You must check it.
We have special travel bags for that reason:

but you don't really have to use that is you have a box or suit case that your cue & case will fit into that will work fine too...and it is cheaper.
If you have a nice case and/or a pricey cue you probably want to encase it in something so that the looks are not a temptation to sticky fingers and maybe even buy the extra insurance depending on the total value of the stuff you have in there.

I work at the airport, you can ask them to hand carry it into the checked baggage area, they will check it by hand and not send it through the x-ray machine ( which might damage it as there are many twists and turns in the belts)
All your other supplies that you mentioned are allowed in your carry on bag if you want to keep them with you.

Ginger as a statistic you are probably right that theft at the air port rarely happens.
It's just that anyone who values a set of pool cues and a case will usually value them way more than the actual cash value (the cash value can be substantial in itself) but the value of the cue as an extention of your talent and ability can not be purchased or replaced. Why risk it if there is a simple way to avoid the risk to begin with. A little bit of planning will usual improve your odds of NOT having that bad experience to deal with.

My recommendation would be to ship the your cue ahead of time to your intended destination via ups or fed ex. While a cue hardly qualifies as fragile, (like fine china for example), they can easily be damaged. As Ginger can likely attest to, luggage is not always given the white glove treatment as loading dock workers are often under intense pressure to get planes loaded up with everything and keep the schedule on time. I imagine this sometimes results in the desperate winging and cramming of suitcases into whatever available space remains.
Obviously, if you're traveling to Zimbabwe, the international freight cost might be prohibitive. But if you're going to SWC for APA, ship it to the hotel where you are staying with the label marked, "Attn, Guest: Brian (your last name), Room# (whatever room you're staying in."
In my work experience, I have dealt heavily with both UPS and FED EX, and although my personal preference lies with UPS, I have found both to be reliable, and both been good about ensuring the safe delivery of cargo that is prone to damage.
I think the worst time to have a heart attack would be during a game of charades... or during a game of fake heart attack. |
