I have created a new forum on this message board, called "Spirit of the Rules". This forum is for discussion of situations where common sense should prevail over the technical interpretation of the rules. Topics in this forum may be compiled into a "Common Sense" guide at some point in the future.

Angst and commoners?

It is better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt

Nope. Common sense is just that, common. It's something that makes sense to the common person. What you describe makes sense to those who understand the physics of the game, but is likely to cause angst among the commoners. Therefore, we rule the way we do on those - no third party, no foul.

Phil would this qualify for one of your common sense rulings?
A player chooses to hit a shot in which the cue ball is less that the width of a piece of chalk from the object ball and upon hitting the cue ball with follow thru the cue ball strikes the object ball then the cue ball passes the object ball and beats the object ball to the rail or even to the pocket.
My common sense ruling would be:
That was a double hit, even if there was no 3rd eye and even if the shooter swears it wasn't, common sense dictates that it was a double hit! Ball in hand to the opponent, even if the shooter was my teammate it makes NO difference it is still a foul!
