Dear Phil, Last night we played at Bikini bar in Ventura. A few of my players refused to play on one of the tables because of a few missing pockets (no plastic, just metal with screws sticking out), a cue ball that could pass for a small moon and a lean that would make the Fox network seem fair and balanced. A few of the opposing teams players claimed they wanted to avoid the table also, but their captain over-ruled them. As for my two players, I had them play on the other table and told them that I would forward their concerns.
Thank you,
Ron |

Unfortunately, we cannot dictate to a host location the condition in which they must maintain their equipment. We depend on the locations to value the business the league brings to their establishment and do what is necessary to keep teams playing there. Many locations have upgraded their equipment after being approached by their own teams, who are free to move to another location with better-maintained tables, etc. We also depend on our teams to make the right choice when choosing a table to play on, and we hope they do not choose a less desirable table for strategic purposes...

| So the way I am reading this, a team does not have the option to refuse play based on the assigned table. If another table is available, can they demand to move? |

Any team may demand whatever they want. They just might not get it. Please refer to the bylaws for our policy on table selection. Basically, the location can assign whatever table they want. If the location doesn't assign one, the home team gets to choose. They just may not choose different tables each week for strategic purposes.

Think you meant to say......."They just may not choose different SIZE tables each week for strategic purposes."?

Actually Doug, a team may NOT choose different tables for strategic purposes based on size or any other factor. Some tables are faster than others, some lean, some have nearby obstacles, some are glorified waffle irons with cloth on them (anyone ever play at Akrey's? Jeez...) There are many things that make one table different from another. The thing is, we all pretty much know each other and players who have been around as long as you and I have know our opponents well enough to know their tendencies and what type of table may pose some difficulties for them based on those tendencies. We shouldn't use that knowledge to affect which table we select as the match play table for the evening. That is gamesmanship. If a choice of tables exists, it should be made based on which table provides the best opportunity for both teams to be able to play as unimpeded as possible, ease of scorekeeping, and the ability to accomodate (drunken) cheering and supportive teammates watching the match. Whoever plays better should win, not whomever garnered an advantage through dubious table choice.

Torsten:
I was trying to pick on Phil. The only thing addressed in the BYLAWS, that I could find, is with regards to table size.

I figured you were. I didn't mean to in any way imply that you used gamesmanship of that sort to give your team an advantage. I know you better than that and your integrity is beyond reproach. I just wanted to make sure that nobody who read this thread came away with the wrong idea. Also, there is always the chance that my interpretations of rules and regs are not 100% accurate so i figure by spouting off here, I will at least be corrected if need be. I was wrong once back in 1983 and I didnt like it...

Doug, you better read the bylaws again. Not only do they address the fact that any size table may be used and teams may not choose different size tables from week to week, they also address 1) who designates which table is to be used for league matches 2) what to do if the Host Location does not designate a specific table 2) who has the final say if the captains' don't agree on a which table to use. |

15. Table Size
Each Host Location may designate the table to be used for League matches. If the Host Location does not designate a specific table, the team captains should agree on which table to use. If the captains cannot reach an agreement through negotiation and compromise, the home team will select the table. Any size table may be used, except in Higher Level Tournaments. Teams may not choose different size tables from week to week for strategic purposes – the same size table must be used all session, if available.
Taz............this is what I was refering to. Again, it only refers to table size.
I don't disagree with the fact that people try to find advantages any way they can and agree that this is bullsh*t! PLAY YOUR GAME ON THE UP AND UP!
Good Shooting!

| The Steelers! weren't they celler dwellers this year. Didn't they finish the season in the running for the first pick in the draft. Well what can you expect from a team with no quarterback, a pathetic running game and a weak defence. Well at their season is done and they can maybe rebuild for next season. |

Hey guys. Uh, I know what the bylaws read but we are always told to use common sense as well. Using what little of it I have, I feel that using a specific table because of it's flaws and what advantages it may bring to a team seems like bs and gamesmanship as I have stated previously on this thread. Nobody has said anything directly to dispute that or to tell me I am mistaken. Can someone either confirm or deny for me? Thanks.
