How and when is the WILD CARD decieded? |

The wildcard is drawn a couple of weeks prior to the end of the session. We put all the teams in a division into the draw, and pull them one at a time, listing them in the order they are drawn.
After we process the final week in the schedule, we go back to the list and cross off any team that is already in the playoffs, as well as any team that is past due or that has forfeited more than five matches during the session. The team that is left at the top of the list gets the wildcard.

The wild card is done "by the book". The Official APA Team Manual, Pg. 37 How the Wild Card Team is Selected.
"After the final league of play, the League Operator or his designated representative, in the presence of witnesses, will conduct the wild card draw. Those teams not making the Playoffs are eligible for the draw unless they gave up more than five forfeit points during the course of the session, are not current with all League fees, or are judged ineligible by the League Operator for some other reason".
Now, what do we actually do (D-rack asks)?
It's quite simple. Anytime after week 4 of the session (that's the cutoff for adding/dropping teams to a division) we conduct the draw. We place a number of peas in a pod, equal to the number of teams in the division (12 team division = 12 peas). You give them a good shake and pull them out one at a time, writing them down on a piece of paper, in a column, in the order in which the numbers are pulled (this is done in front of a witness. At the conclusion of the regular season, we cross out the numbers corresponding to the teams that make it into the playoffs on their own (see local bylaws), any teams that has forfeited more than five matches during the regular season and any team that has a past due balance with the office or is otherwise ineligible for playoffs. The team closest to the top of the column (not crossed off) is the wildcard team.
This session the wild card draw was conducted at The Mix during one of our guaranteed qualifier (Nov. 4). Jackie Jankowski assisted and witnessed the entire draw.

| I got to witness the drawing for the wildcard a couple of seasons ago, It is done as a blind draw. The person drawing the numbered peas has no idea what league is being drawn for. It is all done very professionally, and fairly. I was glad to see this done because my teams have never been drawn for a wild card spot. |

Kerry ........I have been LUCKY enough not to make playoffs but get wild card. In the Camarillo 9 ball there are only 7 or 8 teams and if three are automatically removed my odds are like 1 in 4 so i can live with 25% ...lol
FYI ....I was never questioning the integrity of the draw i just didnt know when it was done?  |
