One of our favorite sons (KC) is playing on the east coast these days and says we pale in comparison to their players. Have we had any national singles champs from our area? i havent been playing that long and my knowledge of the historical data is limited. He says that will tell the tale of the tape.

The difference is in the playing style of east coast vs. west coast players. Most east coast players' have greater use and control of their defensive game. A SL4 that KNOWS defense will make a SL4 that doesn't look bad. Go back 12 years ago when APA started in this area (thanks Phil) and playing defense was looked upon by most players as chicken**** pool. We've come a long way, but we are not there yet. Some of the other leagues within the SF Valley area had actually listed "no defense allowed" in their bylaws.
As to the list of National Champions, all you need to do is either 1) look at the back of your Team Manual or 2) visit www.poolplayers.com, the APA National Website. |

Thanks Taz. I wasnt aware of the listings.
It seems that only Lauren Ward has done well from our South Coast APA at Nationals.
Come on my fellow area people, let's step it up and show the rest of the country we can compete with anyone!

Jon, South Coast APA is not the only area (just the best  ) in the west coast.
The reigning 2006 National Singles Champion in 9-Ball (SL6-9) is Brian Parks from Bakersfield, CA and the reigning 2006 National Singles Champion in 8-Ball (SL2-3) is Ron Schippert from Las Vegas, NV. Also in 2006 Melinda Huang of Los Angeles, CA placed 3rd in 8-Ball (SL6-7).
In 2005 the National Singles 9-Ball Champion (SL 7-9) was Brian Parks from Bakersfield, who is also the current National Champion (he repeated in 2006) and Kathy Kainz from Covina, CA placed 3rd in 8-Ball (SL2-3), while in the Ladies National Team Championship, Ms. Cues of Ontario, CA placed 5th.
The 2004 National Singles Champion 8-Ball (SL6-7) was Frank Almanza from Upland, CA.
The 2002 National Team Champions in the 8-Ball Open Division was the team It’s Like A Nightmare from San Diego, CA. The same year in the Ladies National Team Championship, Bring It On from Ontario, CA took 5th and Chris Abellera of Sunnyvale, CA was crowned 2002 National Singles Champion in 9-Ball (SL4-5). The runner-up was Alex Balogi of San Jose, CA. Also, Howard Dorfman of Soquel, CA placed 3rd in 8-Ball (SL1-3).
In 2000, when the Singles National Championships were not tiered but rather divided into two division, Men & Ladies (before the Singles National Tournament was changed to the current system which holds 6 different tournaments, by skill level tiers - 3 in 8-Ball & 3 in 9-Ball) the National Ladies Champion was Lauren Ward from South Coast APA.
I ‘d say the west coast has taken its share of trophies, though I wouldn’t mind seeing more of them come our way, especially to our SOuth Coast APA members.
