The only thing I heard from Vegas was that the team that beat my team lost pretty early.

Agent 13 from Camarillo is playing the 8:00 am round thursday morning. California has 8 teams left in the 8-ball tournament.

If you go to the national website click on the tournament link and click on "current standings" it will show who is still in it and their next or current match.

it is utterly amazing how the subject "sandbagging" can change to
.....the "standings at the nationals"...ha ha ha....
everybody... thanks for reading....

back to the original subject.... i wasn't so much concerned about the players that suddenly have a GREAT night and beat a seven or a six by a great margin, but, the people who dedliberately miss, to add innings to the score and, lose on purpose so they won't go up in skill ratings... we ALL know this happens

shoot well..... life is short

Knowing it happens and "having the goods" on someone are two different things. "Having the goods" means a current or former teammate reports to us exactly what has happened and is willing to sign an affidavit to that effect. This has actually only happened twice since we started. One captain was suspended for six months and had to admit what he did in writing before being allowed to play again (and he still can't be a team captain). The other got a permanent suspension, as his offenses were much more serious.

For the rest, all we can do is try to make the skill levels as accurate as possible. Even if we're positive someone is trying to manipulate, without "the goods" our only recourses are to make skill level adjustments or to make it as difficult as possible for that player/team to continue playing in the league.

There are quite a few players in the league today who did not "earn" their current ratings. They were raised ("bumped", "jacked", whatever term you prefer) by the League Office or the Handicap Advisory Committee. That does NOT mean they are ALL suspected of cheating, but some of them are (and no, it will not do you any good to ask which are and which are not ). In one case, four players were raised a total of eight skill levels over the course of two years. None of them ever went up on their own. They finally got the message and quit, but only after they had been informed of this fact. I couldn't kick them out, so I had to do what I could to invite them out. To this day none of them plays in the league, and it doesn't bother me a bit. If you want to cheat, go cheat somewhere else.

It all starts with names and details. Without that, all we have is what's on the score sheets. Sometimes the score sheets do tell a story, but it's much easier to see if you're looking for it, meaning the flag has already been raised on that particular player/team. The Skill Level Evaluation Request form is the best way to raise that flag. Fill it out in as much detail as you can and get the cheaters on our radar.

Are people going to try to cheat? Yes. Are they going to get away with it? Some probably will, at least for a while. Eventually they will get tired of cheating, get tired of playing altogether, or get caught. However it happens, the result will be the same - one less cheater in our league.

Will honest players be accused of cheating? You betcha. In fact, that's what often holds us back. We can't penalize an honest player just because someone thinks they're cheating. If we did that, nearly everyone would be overrated. Soooooooo, the question is not whether we know players are cheating. Yes, we know that. The question for us is which ones? It's up to you to help us figure that out.

Phil
